Racing Conference Addresses Fast Changing Industry24 April 2003WASHINGTON -- As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: "Association of Racing Commissioners International (RCI) members will gather at Seattle's Grand Hyatt Hotel this week for the organization's 69th annual convention, and pari-mutuel regulators from across the continent will examine a fast-changing industry and how they will respond to those changes. "The official opening of the convention will be Thursday evening, and sessions on Friday and Saturday will address the two hottest topics for regulators, drug testing and the integrity of the pari-mutuel wagering system. "...One issue that has emerged in the past year is pari-mutuel integrity after three former Drexel University fraternity brothers successfully fixed the Breeders' Cup Ultra Pick Six wager. The big payout, more than $3-million, focused attention on them and led to their capture and guilty pleas. All three have been sentenced to prison. "...Tim Smith, commissioner of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, will provide a progress report on the Wagering Technology Work Group, which was formed after an initial investigation found that security gaps allowed an Autotote employee to change the bet to a winning one after the first four races of the wager had been run. "Also scheduled for Friday morning's program is a presentation on the industry's movement toward racinos, the combination of racetracks and casinos..." |
