Quebec Gambling-Linked Suicides Down

QUEBEC – As reported by the Montreal Gazette: "The number of suicides linked to compulsive gambling was down in 2002 over previous years, according to the Quebec coroner's office.

"After having attained a summit in 1999, with 33, the number of suicides linked to compulsive gambling dropped significantly - about 20 in 2000 - before climbing to 30 in 2001. As of Dec. 18, 2002, only a dozen gambling-related suicides had been registered.

"François Houle, spokesman for the coroner's office, cautioned that it was too early to draw conclusions.

"…Even if the number of gambling-related suicides has dropped; gambling-related problems are growing if statistics gathered by the gambling help and referral hotline are any indication…"
