Punter Blows Company Millions

31 July 2003

AUSTRALIA – As reported (AUSTRALIA) Advertiser: “A mug punter who used big thefts to fuel a $6.5 million (U$4.2 million) betting binge blew the lot and was left with 40 cents - not even enough for the minimum bet.

“Vince Marinkovic sometimes gambled more in a day than he earned in a year during a six-year betting spree which fleeced $2.4 million from his employer.

“…But by the time Marinkovic's run ended on November 21 last year, his account did not hold enough for a single bet.

“…Marinkovic, of Altona North, yesterday pleaded guilty in Melbourne Magistrates' Court to seven counts of theft.

“…Records later revealed the hopelessly addicted punter made hundreds of deposits of up to $7000 into his telephone account during his racing roller-coaster ride.

“Marinkovic earned about $30,000 a year as an accounts clerk for Brooklyn-based paint supplier Jotun Pty Ltd.

“…But the company did not know he was giving himself huge `bonuses’ to fuel his gambling addiction.

“…`Everyone thought he was an extremely loyal employee, always looking after the books,’ one source said…”
