Powerball Soars to $86 Million

27 January 2003

UNITED STATES – (Press Release) -- The jackpot keeps growing and hundreds of thousands of players keep winning prizes in America's Game. There were no Powerball jackpot winners Saturday but 504,222 players across the nation won a total of more than $3.6 million in prizes.

Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Saturday's drawing the jackpot will grow to an estimated $86 million; making Powerball the fastest-growing multi-state lottery game in the country!

The cash option for the Wednesday, January 29 drawing will be an estimated $46.6 million.

The numbers drawn were: 10, 12, 15, 49, 51, and the Powerball was 21. The Power Play multiplier was 5.

One player correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. The winning ticket was sold in Connecticut. That player did not purchase the Power Play option. An extra dollar would have multiplied their prize by 5 for a total win of $500,000.

Thirty-one players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Three of those players purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $25,000.

More than 57,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 5 Saturday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier.

This current jackpot run started with the Saturday, December 28 drawing. The drawing on Saturday night was the 9th consecutive draw without being hit. More than 3.5 million Powerball players across the nation have won prizes since this jackpot run started in late December.

Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels.

Players purchased more than 20 million tickets between Thursday and Saturday night.

The lotteries sold $1.6 billion in Powerball tickets in 2002. That translates into more than $480 million for worthwhile state projects.

Powerball is now played in 23 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
