Powerball Jackpot Rises to $88 Million

9 September 2002

DES MOINES, Iowa – (Press Release) -- The biggest lottery jackpot in the country is on the rise again. There were no jackpot winners Saturday but 589,892 players across the nation won a total of more than $6.2 million in prizes in America's Game.

Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Saturday's drawing the jackpot will grow to an estimated $88 million.

The cash option for the Wednesday, September 11 drawing will be an estimated $53 million.

The numbers drawn were: 6, 12, 19, 24, 34, and the Powerball was 18. The Power Play multiplier was 5.

Fourteen players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. The tickets were sold in Arizona, Colorado (2), Connecticut (2), Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky (2), Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and South Dakota. One of the winning Colorado players purchased the Power Play option. By spending the extra dollar they multiplied their prize by 5 for a total win of $500,000!

Seventy-seven players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Four of those players purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $25,000.

More than 46,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 5 Saturday. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier.

This current jackpot run started with the Wednesday, July 24 drawing. The drawing on Saturday night was the 14th consecutive draw without being hit. More than 3.7 million Powerball players across the nation have won more than $36 million in prizes since this jackpot run started in late July.

Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels.

Players purchased more than 21.3 million tickets between Thursday and Saturday night.

The lotteries sold $1.3 billion in Powerball tickets in 2001. That translates into more than $400 million for worthwhile state projects.

Powerball is now played in 22 states and the District of Columbia. South Carolina will begin selling Powerball tickets in October.
