Powerball Jackpot Grows to $165 Million

30 June 2003

IOWA – (Press Release) -- The excitement is growing along with the jackpot in America's favorite lottery game. Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Saturday's Powerball drawing the jackpot will grow to an estimated $165 million. That's currently the largest lottery jackpot in the world.

There were no Powerball jackpot winners Saturday but 1,028,426 players across the nation won a total of more than $8 million in prizes in America's Game.

The cash option for the Wednesday, July 2 drawing will be an estimated $94.1 million.

The numbers drawn were: 7, 9, 14, 41, 44, and the Powerball was 25. The Power Play multiplier was 4.

Twelve players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. The tickets were sold in Connecticut, DC, Indiana (2), Kentucky, Rhode Island, South Carolina (3), and Wisconsin (3). One of the winning South Carolina players purchased the Power Play option. By spending the extra dollar that player multiplied their prize by 4 for a total win of $400,000!

Sixty-eight players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Three of those players purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $20,000.

More than 94,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 4 Saturday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier.

This current jackpot run started with the Saturday, May 10 drawing. The drawing on Saturday night was the 15th consecutive draw without being hit. Almost 6.7 million Powerball players across the nation have won prizes since this jackpot run started in early May.

Players purchased more than 40 million tickets between Thursday and Saturday night.

The lotteries sold $1.6 billion in Powerball tickets in 2002. That translates into more than $480 million for worthwhile state projects.

Powerball is now played in 23 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Vermont begins selling Powerball tickets on July 1.
