Powerball Fever Affects Maryland State Lotto

MARYLAND – August 28, 2001 –As reported by the Cecil Whig: "Maryland residents who recently traveled to Delaware to buy Powerball tickets could have won more money by playing the Maryland State Lottery's classic lotto drawing Saturday night.

"If they had picked the right numbers.

"The state's Big Game jackpot, now up to $90 million, reached $74 million this weekend.

"Four winners sharing Saturday's Powerball jackpot of $294.8 million will receive $73.7 million each - $2.9 million per year for 25 years as an annuity - or a cash option good for $41.4 million now, before taxes.

"…Maryland State Lottery Communications Director Jimmy White said sales representatives noticed spotty areas last week - where some retailers recorded a decline in sales - but generated revenue was about $3 million higher than the same week last year.

"…Dominick Eldreth, an employee at Northside Liquors in Elkton, said fewer Maryland State Lottery tickets were sold the last few weeks when the Powerball jackpot was approaching record numbers.

"…He said most customers were not even aware of the state's jackpot, and often didn't bother to ask…"
