Polls: Arizonans Back Tribal Gaming, Want State to Share Wealth

ARIZONA -- March 14, 2002 -- As reported by the Tucson Citizen: ``A pair of polls on Indian gaming indicate surprisingly strong support for the continuation of gaming on Arizona reservations and for plans to provide a portion of gaming revenues for state education and elder-care programs.

``Three quarters of Arizonans believe Indian gaming provides more advantages than disadvantages to the state's tribes, and 43 percent of respondents indicated they are likely to gamble in an Indian casino during the coming year, according to a poll by Northern Arizona University.

``The poll was conducted March 29-April 3 by NAU's Social Research Laboratory in interviews with 405 Arizona residents, according to Fred Solop, director of the laboratory.

``A second poll, conducted by YES for Arizona, a group supporting the Colorado River Indian Tribal Initiative, showed that 64 percent of those polled favor the initiative's plan to earmark gaming revenue for education and elder care, according to Ray Bernal, a Chemehuevi Indian and chairman of the support group.

``The initiative and the proposed gaming compact are similar in some respects. Both would permit tribes to sell unused slot machine allotments to other tribes, both would contribute a portion of gaming revenues for state programs, and both would allow poker and blackjack tables..."
