Poll: Mainers Split on Kittery Casino Plan1 April 2002PORTLAND, Maine –As reported by the Associated Press: " Mainers are nearly evenly split over a proposal by two Indian tribes to build a gambling casino in Kittery, according to poll results published Sunday. "Fifty percent of those responding said they oppose the casino plan advanced by the Penobscot and Passamaquoddy tribes, while 44 percent favor it and 6 percent either have no opinion or want more information. "…The survey showed the stiffest opposition to the casino in southern Maine, where impacts like traffic would be felt most directly. It received larger levels of support in central and western Maine. "Richard Barringer, professor of public policy and management at the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine, said people who live in less prosperous areas of the state are more inclined to support a casino. "While the poll results are a good indicator of what people are feeling, they don't gauge the intensity of those feelings, Barringer said. "…The tribes envision building a $400 million to $600 million casino in Kittery, which they say could generate $100 million in state revenues." |
