Poll: Kentuckians Favor Slots At Tracks

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – As reported by the Associated Press: "A slight majority of Kentuckians favor slot machines at the state's horse-racing tracks, according to a Bluegrass Poll by The Courier-Journal of Louisville.

"Kentucky's signature industry wants the machines so that it can recoup money they say is now going to casinos in neighboring states, including Indiana. Their expensive lobbying effort failed to push a bill to bring slots to horse tracks through the last General Assembly. It died before it even reached a vote.

"The poll found that 55 percent favor and 38 percent oppose slots at the tracks, while 7 percent had no opinion. Twenty percent of opponents said they would change their minds if voters in race-track counties had some input.

"…Some studies have estimated that putting slots at the tracks could generate more than $300 million a year for the state and casino supporters argue that as long as Kentuckians gamble, the money should stay here.

"…Many opponents, noting gambling's negative and addicting effects, are wary of making even more opportunities available.

"…Young adults are the strongest supporters of bringing slots to the tracks - 69 percent of 18-to-34-year-olds favor it, with 25 percent opposed. Kentuckians 50 or older narrowly opposed slots, 48 percent to 44 percent…"
