Poll: Interest in Racing Growing

LAS VEGAS –As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: "Interest in horse racing in the United States has increased for the third straight year and the results of a recent national poll show that the sport has closed the gap slightly against some of the country's major sports, including professional football, basketball, and baseball.

"Results of the TNS Intersearch-ESPN Sports poll, which showed the heightened interest in horse racing's fan base among people age 12 and up, were unveiled during the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's fourth annual Marketing Summit on March 11-12 at the Mirage Hotel and Casino's Treasure Island in Las Vegas.

"Horse racing was one of only four sports—along with NASCAR, Women's National Basketball Association, and professional boxing—that showed an increase from 2000 to '01. NASCAR enjoyed the largest increase at 10.9%, while racing was second with 5.4%.

"…NTRA Commissioner Tim Smith said the challenge now is to turn the increased awareness of racing into increased participation.

"…However, racing is still well behind the percentage levels enjoyed by the NFL (66.8%), Major League Baseball (59.6%), college football (55.8%), and the National Basketball Association (51.6%)…"
