Police, Harrah's Employees Charged with Fixing Promotion

22 August 2002

CROWN POINT, Indiana – As reported by the Associated Press: "Three East Chicago police officers and two former Harrah's Casino employees have been charged with trying to fix the outcome of a casino promotion.

"The officers, who were charged with theft, are Juan P. Lopez, 26, and William Pabey, 47, both of East Chicago, and Alan M. Slivko, 41, of Schererville.

"A relative of Lopez's and two former casino workers were also charged with theft.

"…Prosecutors say the scheme developed when the two casino workers obtained winning-combination codes to a game called 'Crack the Code' in February.

"These winning numbers were provided to Lopez, who then gave the numbers to Slivko and Pabey. All three collected $1,000 prizes.

"The three officers are to voluntarily surrender to Indiana State Police this week, East Chicago police spokesman Joseph De La Cruz said.

"…The Indiana Gaming Commission also is looking into sanctions against Harrah's for possible security breaches…"
