Pittsburgh Man Wins Lottery's Big CASH 5 Top Jackpot Prize

21 April 2000

MIDDLETOWN, Pa., April 21 (Press Release) - Daniel Swearingen, 23, of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, was the sole winner of the Pennsylvania Lottery's CASH 5 jackpot prize on March 1, 2000. The jackpot was worth $685,926.50.

After paying off his college education, Daniel plans to invest and to share his winnings with family members that include his parents, two brothers and a sister. According to Dan's father, Charles Swearingen Sr., who is retired from the airline business, the father-and-son team play CASH 5 daily.

"Dan had a $1 winning instant ticket, to which we each added $2, and he made a $5 CASH 5 ticket purchase for the March 1 drawing," Mr. Swearingen Sr. recalls.

"My wife and I were shopping at Giant Eagle that evening and we saw the Lottery drawing results flashed on the machine...never thinking that it was a sign of things to come." He explains, "We got home from the store and the phone began ringing. It was Dan, calling from the lanes where he and his brother were bowling, and he says, 'Dad, guess what!' Now, I have a wife, three sons and a daughter, so I am used to doing something and being in trouble for it!"

Mr. Sweaingen continues, "Dan says, 'Dad! You won the lottery!' My wife and I left the grocery bags - some were in the kitchen, some were still in the car and the rest were on the living room floor where I dropped them to answer the phone - and drove to the bowling alley to meet Dan and his brother. We filed our claim in the Pittsburgh Area Lottery Office the next day."

Daniel Swearingen purchased his winning CASH 5 ticket from the Uni Mart located at 1181 Romine Avenue in McKeesport, Allegheny County. He has received his CASH 5 winnings check for $685,926.50, less 28 percent federal withholdings. His winning CASH 5 combination - 04-20-22-29-39 - was a quick pick, computer selected number.

Will Daniel and his father continue to play CASH 5, now that they have experienced a substantial win? "I just came back from buying our CASH 5 and our Super 6 Lotto tickets for the week," Charles says. Daniel Swearingen's top prize win ranks as the fifth largest CASH 5 jackpot ever paid out since the game was introduced eight years ago - on April 23, 1992.

The largest CASH 5 jackpot ever won was the $1,000,000. Lrostona Cox of York won that amount on March 17, 1996.

To play CASH 5, players select five numbers from 1 to 39. Players must match all five winning numbers drawn to win the top prize, which starts at $100,000 and continues to roll until it is won. The Pennsylvania Lottery also pays players for matching four-, three-, and two-of-five winning CASH 5 numbers.

The Pennsylvania Lottery remains the only state lottery that exclusively targets its proceeds to benefit older citizens. Since its inception 28 years ago, the Lottery has provided $11 billion in program benefits that have expanded to support property tax and rent rebates, free and reduced-fare transit for older Pennsylvanians, a co-pay prescription drug program (PACE and PACENET) and 52 Area Agencies on Aging which include 650 full and part time senior centers statewide. Player must be 18 years of age or older.
