Philippines Games Amusement Board to go After Illegal Gambling

THE PHILIPPINES -- As reported by the (Philippines) Sun Star: ``The newly-installed chairman of the Games and Amusement Board said he will ensure that no "illegal gambling" will exist in the level of amateur sports competitions.

``...GAB, a sports body directly under the Office of the President, regulates and supervises all professional sports such as bowling, billiards and chess.

``Part of its function is to sanction the pros and ensure that annual fees from athletes are properly collected.

``Speaking about gambling in sports, Eduardo Villanueva (Chairman) said, it is mandated by law that no cash prizes should be involved in tournaments classified under the amateur level of competitions.

``Cash purse should only be given in the professional level of games, he said.

``...Villanueva also said that GAB, as an anti-illegal gambling unit, possesses certain police functions and coordinates with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police..."
