Philadelphia Mayoral Candidate Proposes Non-Profit Run Casino

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Philadelphia Daily News: "If Green Bay can own a football team, why can't Philadelphia own a casino?

"Republican mayoral candidate Sam Katz isn't proposing a municipal gaming house (picture the Parking Authority running blackjack tables), but he is talking about a nonprofit corporation that would capture the bounty of casino profits for the public good.

"…`We have a chance here to funnel $100 million annually back to the people of Philadelphia,' Katz said yesterday. `Think of how we could transform the lives of our children.'

"A group of well-heeled private investors has formed to develop a harness track with slot machines at a Navy Yard site, and Katz is suggesting the casino-for-non-profit idea be considered in the mix.

"…Katz is not suggesting a full-fledged casino, but speaking generally of gambling in Philadelphia.

"…Katz said his nonprofit corporation, Forward Philadelphia, would bring in an experienced gaming company to run the casino on a fee-plus-incentive basis…"
