Pennsylvania Joins Powerball Family28 June 2002PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Pittsburgh Union-Tribune: "Powerball tickets went on sale at 5 a.m. today, making the state the 23rd to participate in the multi-state jackpot lotto game. "Some players seemed primed and ready to get in on the action, but retailers have yet to see a mad rush for the newest chance to make dreams come true. "`We had our first Powerball customer at 5:05 a.m.,' said Diane Romanko, manager at the Speedy Meedy's along Route 31 in Laurelville. "…With Pennsylvania now in the game, Powerball is played in 22 states and the District of Columbia. South Carolina will begin selling the tickets in October. "`I've been wanting to play it for a long time, but we didn't have it here,' said John Yarenko of Irwin. `It's a chance to win a huge amount of money. I'm hoping, anyway.' "…`A lot of people used to go out of state to get (tickets) before,' said Lisa Hampshire, manager at West Side News in Connellsville. "`But that money will stay here now,' Hampshire said. `It's benefitting us.' "The game is expected to increase Pennsylvania Lottery sales by about $60 million to $100 million during its first year. "Hampshire said she has yet to see the long lines that sometimes accompany a new jackpot opportunity. "…The minimum jackpot for Powerball starts at $10 million.
