Park Place Seeks Federal Approval for Resort22 March 2001ALBANY, New York—March 22, 2001—As reported by the New York Times Union: "Eleven months after partnering with the St. Regis Mohawks on a proposed casino in Monticello, Sullivan County, Park Place Entertainment intends to submit an application to the federal government Friday seeking approval of the roughly $700 million project at the Kutsher's Resort Hotel and Country Club. "The application to the Bureau of Indian Affairs will be filed before week's end, said Kim Sinatra, a project manager for Park Place, owners of Caesar's Palace, Bally's casinos and 29 casinos worldwide. "The company had wanted to apply months ago but couldn't complete several necessary steps. The federal government must approve taking land in Monticello into trust for the Mohawks before the tribe can operate an off-reservation casino there. "…The Mohawks, working with a separate development company, also plan for an off-reservation casino in the Town of Catskill, 30 miles south of Albany. That project requires separate approvals. "…The tribal court Tuesday ruled in favor of some Mohawks who sued Park Place for interfering with a casino partnership between the tribal government and Catskill Development Corp., which last year gained the only land-to-trust approval ever granted in New York. The court issued a $1.7 billion judgment against Park Place, but it is unclear how enforceable the action is since the tribal government does not recognize the court…" |
