Paragon Gaming Signs Agreement With California Tribe28 August 2001LAS VEGAS –(Press Release)-- August 28, 2001– Las Vegas-based tribal casino management company Paragon Gaming Holding Co., LLC announced today the company has entered into development, consultant and management agreements with the Augustine Band of Cahuilla Mission Indians in Coachella Valley, Calif. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The agreements will ultimately result in a Class III casino to be developed later this year in Coachella Valley, located just outside of Palm Springs. The tribe has licenses to operate up to 700 slot machines. "After many years of working to achieve economic independence for my tribe, I believe this venture will secure the future of our tribe and culture for many generations to come," said Maryann Martin, tribal chairperson. Speaking for Paragon, company president Diana L. Bennett said, "We are delighted to have come to terms with the tribe and are excited to begin developing the region's newest, most exciting casino. We will immediately begin developing an outline for the project in concert with tribal and local leaders, and we hope to have final renderings for the property in the very near future." Paragon's seasoned group of specialists from the gaming industry bring to bear years of experience in the special problems of casino development with the tribal nations. The company's unique business model considers all phases of tribal gaming, from federal recognition to construction to management. The Augustine Reservation is located in the region belonging to the Desert Cahuilla, just south of the communities of Indio and Coachella. Historically, the area is referred to as La Mesa, and the Augustine people are referred to as Sewahil, or Sweahilem ("mesquite that is not sweet") in the historical texts. They are believed to have originally come from the Santa Rosa Mountains. Sewahil is the name of the lineage of Maria Augustine, as well as of the land itself – the land later known as the Augustine Reservation. |
