Panel: Gambling Problems Are Cancer

TENNESSEE – As reported by the Tennessee Daily Times: "Gambling is a problem, even in East Tennessee where there are no major professional sports but plenty of major college athletic events.

"That's the consensus of a panel of experts on gambling in the NCAA.

"The panel met last week at the University Center at the University of Tennessee to discuss how gambling can effect the UT campus, as well as other colleges around the country.

"`The gambling problems we face today are a cancer,' said Gary Wyant, associate athletic director at UT.

"…The panel was made up of four experts in the field of gambling and the NCAA.

"Wyant said the major problem East Tennessee faces is not with gambling on professional sports but gambling on UT games, the moneymaker for illegal bookmakers in the area.

" …[Deana Garner, a NCAA investigator,] made it clear that the NCAA has no objections towards legal gambling, but they do have objections on illegal gambling when it comes to college sports.

"…[Todd Sandstedt, a FBI agent.] said the biggest problem areas in the area for gambling are bars and clubs with several televisions tuned into different games. That way bookies and gamblers can keep track of all the games they laid money on.

"…He said the problem with gambling is that once it starts at the individual level it can easily lead into organized crime…"
