Oz Government's Internet Gaming Stance Could Affect Election

AUSTRALIA – June 12, 2001 –As reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation: "Senior racing industry representatives will tell Prime Minister John Howard tonight that the Federal Government's stand on Internet gambling could cost it seats at the federal election.

"The racing industry wants online betting on horse racing excluded from the proposed ban on Internet gambling.

"…The racing industry has intensively lobbied Senators and is optimistic the bill will be rejected unless betting on horse racing is taken out, but it will step up its campaign tonight when Mr Howard attends the Australian Racing Board Awards.

"…The board's chairman, Bob Charley, says he will tell Mr Howard it could be an election issue…"
