23 March 1997

COLOMBO -- Over 100 jackpot machines were seized in Sri Lanka over the weekend and 10 people were arrested by police for illegally operating the machines, according to police sources here today.

The sources said that the police have recently imposed heavy penalties under the Special Emergency Regulations on illegal video parlors and jackpot centers in and around Colombo.

The police sent a special team to mount the raids on the jackpot centers and said numerous complaints had been made to them that school children had been seen in video parlors and gambling dens during school hours.

Under the Special Emergency Regulations, operators of illegal video parlors and gambling dens face a hard labor jail term of not less than 10 years or a fine of Rs 100,000 (1,800 US dollars) or both penalties, the sources added.

Over 130 operators were arrested, and 25 video parlors and 79 jackpot centers destroyed by police last week.
