Open Championship Will Be Biggest Golf Betting Event of All, Thanks to Internet

19 July 2000

LONDON,--(Press Release)-- July 19,2000 -- Ernie Els has emerged as the player the bookies fear in this week's Open Championship, which is set to become the biggest golf betting event ever thanks to internet punters from all over the world logging on to back their fancy.

Top internet bookies William Hill, who predict that up to 10 million pounds sterling will be gambled on the tournament, face a six-figure loss if Els, backed from 20/1 to 14/1 joint second favourite, wins the event.

``We've taken a stream of bets for Els since his victory in the Loch Lomond event at the weekend, and we're looking at a massive payout if he lands the Open'', said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe. Hills will be updating their odds hole by hole as the tournament progresses.

Tiger Woods will be the hottest Open favourite ever, with Hills quoting him at 2/1 -- ``If he had won the Masters and could still win the Grand Slam he'd be an odds-on shot here'', said Sharpe.

``This will be the first Open which offers world wide access to tax-free betting facilities for punters and with William Hill boasting clients from over 100 countries we are anticipating record-breaking betting business'', said Sharpe.

Last year's winner Paul Lawrie is quoted at 125/1 by Hills, who offer Seve Ballesteros at 2/9 to miss the cut and 3/1 to make it.
