Oneida remains neutral on tribal gaming proposals

WASHINGTON, DC — As reported by the Green Bay Press: "A proposal to restrict development of new Indian casinos on off-reservation sites has exposed deep divisions among Indian tribes across the country.

"However, the Oneida Nation — which depends heavily on its gaming arm for revenue — is attempting to remain neutral, although that might change depending on the final changes, said Kathy Hughes, vice-chairman of the Tribe.

"…The concern the Oneidas have has more to do with regulations that may affect land claims rather than casino-building, Hughes said. Although the Oneida Nation Casino and Bingo is a successful operation that accounts for 90 percent of the tribe's annual revenue, the tribe has not looked at projects outside the reservation.

"The proposed new guidelines have drawn hundreds of comments from tribes, religious groups, anti-gambling organizations and local governments. The department expects to make a decision this spring…"
