Official: Maine Town Against Another Casino Vote20 November 2002SANFORD, Maine – As reported by the Maine Journal Tribune: "Residents will not vote again on a Sanford casino, according to a town official. But it's likely that Mainers will vote on a statewide referendum to legalize gambling. "Casino advocates are working to put a question on a statewide ballot and are busy putting together a specific proposal for Sanford, where voters Nov. 5 narrowly approved casino gambling in a non-binding referendum. "Julie Carlson, Sanford's spokeswoman, said town officials have already met with Think About It, the pro-casino group that includes attorney Tom Tureen, who helped bring casinos to Connecticut and is taking the lead in pushing tribal gambling plans in Maine. "…But the Indian tribes proposing a casino - the Passamaquoddy and the Penobscot - can't build one in Sanford unless gambling is legalized under state law. "…After working - with mixed success - to defeat local gambling referendums in Sanford and Biddeford, casino opponents are also gearing up for a statewide campaign. "…Even if casino gambling is legalized, Sanford residents have voted on casino gambling for the last time, according to Carlson…" |
