Oasis Casino Waits for Israeli Gamblers11 March 2005ISRAEL – As reported by the Jerusalem Post: "While the chips were set up in neatly packed rows and the slot machines shined and flashed vibrantly on Thursday the only element missing from the fancy state-of-the-art Oasis Casino in Jericho was the gamblers who were nowhere to be seen. "Once the daily Mecca for some 3,000 Israelis, the Oasis Casino was empty and silent on Thursday – the product, as manager Hans Holek explained, of four years of Palestinian-Israeli violence. "The end to the deathly silence in the casino might however be on the horizon. On Wednesday, IDF officers met with their Palestinian counterparts at a roadblock outside the West Bank city to discuss the transfer of security over Jericho from the IDF to the Palestinian Authority. "The talks failed to produce a final agreement but Holek as well as other employees at the casino and its adjoining Intercontinental five-star hotel were optimistic. If the city is transferred over to Palestinian hands, they said, it is only a matter of time before the busloads of Israelis who flocked to the casino before the eruption of violence four years ago, begin making their way back towards Jericho. "Government sources told The Jerusalem Post Thursday there was a good chance Israelis would be allowed to travel to the casino once the Palestinians prove they have a firm control over the city's security…" |
