NJ health commissioner joins smoking ban effort29 November 2006ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "People who want to clear the smoke out of the resort's gaming halls brought out the big guns Tuesday as City Council prepares to hold hearings on an ordinance to ban lit tobacco from the casinos. "State Health Commissioner Dr. Fred Jacobs spoke to advocates and reporters about the need to make casino floors smoke-free. "…The state's Smoke Free Air Act went into effect April 15, but exempted gaming areas of Atlantic City's casinos. City Council unanimously introduced an ordinance at its Nov. 15 meeting that would ban smoking in all indoor workplaces in the city, including casinos. The first of three public hearings is scheduled for today. "The New Jersey Casino Association, concerned that the ban might lead to a loss in business, has said it plans to challenge the ordinance in court…" |
