New Technology to Spur British Gambling

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by ZDNet: "New technology will boost gambling over the coming decade in the United Kingdom, which already has the greatest concentration of gamblers of any country in the world, according to a new study.

"Three-quarters of the UK population currently take part in some form of gambling, said a study released on Tuesday by research firm Screen Digest and Dutch bank ABN Amro.

"In the future, a greater percentage of Britons will place their bets on a variety of gadgets from mobile phones to desktop computers, experts have predicted.

"…The forecast is good news for a variety of firms, ranging from satellite television operator BSkyB to bookmaker Ladbrokes, keen on exploiting new technologies to allow consumers to wager wherever and whenever they want.

"…`But the future may look somewhat different with the emergence of interactive TV, growth in online betting, and changing views on gambling within the UK government,' said Ben Keen, a co-author of the report.

"Internet betting alone in the UK is forecast to grow to £1.4 billion (US$1,978,212,905) in 2010 from £553 million (US$781,840,558) this year…"
