New Tax Hike Spurs 4 Casinos to Seek Shorter Hours

ILLINOIS -- As reported by the Chicago Sun Times: ``Four Illinois casinos, three of them in the Chicago area, want to reduce the amount of time they're open in response to higher state wagering taxes that kicked in on July 1.

``But the cost-cutting measures might not be as simple as locking the doors and shutting off the lights earlier.

``State gambling regulators might stand in the way of the changes because of a law that requires them to consider "the highest prospective total revenue to be derived by the state" from casinos when they award licenses for them.

``If Illinois Gaming Board members reason that scaling back hours could reduce casino tax receipts, they might balk at the idea.

``The requests from Hollywood Casino in Aurora, Alton Belle Casino near St. Louis and Joliet's Harrah's and Empress casinos are set to be considered Friday by the board..."
