New Mexico Casino Rolling Out the Red Carpet

24 May 2001

SANDIA PUEBLO, New Mexico —– As reported by the Albuquerque Journal: "Sandia Pueblo opens its massive $80 million, 209,000-square-foot casino Friday night with fireworks, the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and gifts for the first 10,000 gamblers.

"…The casino at Tramway just east of Interstate 25 will offer 1,350 electronic slot machines — about 850 more than the old casino — and 33 gaming tables for roulette, blackjack, craps, let-it-ride, 3-card stud and Caribbean stud. A separate poker room, a keno lounge and a bingo room also will open.

"`We want to offer as many different varieties of entertainment we can to bring people to the casino,' said Steve Penhall, the casino's general manager.

"…The new casino with its large vigas, high ceilings and artwork from pueblo artists from around the state is expected to increase the number of gamblers who come through the door from 5,000 a day at the old spot across Interstate 25 to between 7,500 to 8,000, Penhall said.
