New Jersey Democrats Reject Casinos Proposal

20 June 2003

TRENTON - The casino industry offered a plan Thursday to raise the $90 million Democrats want to fill a state budget gap, but Democrats rejected it, saying the proposal asks casino visitors - and not casinos - to pick up the bill.

“State Sen. Bill Gormley, R-Atlantic, said casino owners would pay about $25 million out of their bottom line under the plan, with another $25 million coming from slot-machine manufacturers.

“The senator offered a different theory for the Democrats' rejection.

“Assembly Budget Committee Chairman Lou Greenwald `won't give up protecting Donald Trump,’ Gormley said.

“Greenwald, D-Camden, is the Assembly sponsor of a bill that seeks to raise $90 million from the casino industry, with $58 million coming from a tax on casino profits.

“Trump - who has turned a profit in only one of his three casinos since he started his company in 1995 - would pay a much smaller share than most of his competitors along the Boardwalk.

“…The Democratic State Committee launched a new ad Thursday that attacks Republicans for `siding with the casinos against the rest of us.’

“Republicans say the casino tax increase - and seven other tax hikes proposed by Democrats - are unnecessary and harmful to the economy…”
