New Jersey Couple Claims $53 Million Jackpot10 January 2002BAYONNE, New Jersey – Jan. 10, 2002—As reported by the Associated Press: " A Bayonne couple claimed a $53 million Big Game jackpot Wednesday. "Carol Byrnes, 49, and John A. Michalski, 54, held the only winning ticket from the Oct. 16, 2001, drawing. They told New Jersey Lottery officials they have no immediate plans for their winnings. "The couple chose the cash option, and each received a check for $14,879,273 after federal taxes. Had they chosen the annuity option, the entire $53 million jackpot would have been paid out in 26 annual installments. "…It was the second-largest Big Game jackpot ever claimed in New Jersey. The Aug. 31, 2001, drawing had two winning tickets that split a $118 million prize. "Meanwhile, the current Big Game jackpot rolled over for the 16th time Tuesday, and now stands at $80 million for Friday's drawing…" |
