Nevada Sen. Neal Pushes New Gaming Bills

CARSON CITY, Nevada – Feb. 13, 2001 –As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: "Three gambling-related bills, including measures to raise the gaming tax and require jackpots to be paid on malfunctioning slot machines, were introduced Monday by industry critic Sen. Joe Neal, D-North Las Vegas.

"Senate Bill 100 would require jackpots to be paid on malfunctioning machines unless the person playing the machine intentionally caused the malfunction. The bill was referred to the Judiciary Committee.

"Senate Bill 104 would require the secretary of state to place an advisory question regarding gaming taxes on the November 2002 general election ballot.

"…Senate Bill 105 would raise the top gaming tax rate from 6.25 percent to 10.25 percent, an increase Neal said would raise about $300 million a year in new revenue.

"…Neal said the tax bills are not likely to receive much support, but the measures answer critics who said last year that his initiative petition to raise gaming taxes was the wrong way to propose a tax increase.

"…Casinos in Nevada now pay a tax of 3 percent on gaming revenues below $50,000 a month, a tax of 4 percent on revenue above $50,000 but below $134,000 a month, and 6.25 percent on gross revenue in excess of $134,000 a month. Neal's tax proposals deal with the third tax tier…"
