Nevada GOP's Casino Night Scrapped19 July 2000RENO, NEVADA – July 19, 2000 – As reported by Associated Press: "A Las Vegas-style casino night that was to be the Nevada Republican Party"s biggest fund-raiser at the national convention in Philadelphia has run into a bit of trouble. It turns out gambling is illegal in Pennsylvania -- even if it's with fake money and chips. "Pennsylvania Attorney General Mike Fisher advised the Nevada delegation to that effect this week, and as a result, GOP leaders have decided to scrap the event they had hoped would bring in as much as $100,000 to help elect Republicans in Nevada. "…Nevada Republicans had hoped to use the $100-per-person `Las Vegas Night' to raise money and lobby anyone who would listen to the state's views on a number of issues before Congress -- from a proposed ban on betting on NCAA sports to efforts to regulate gambling on the Internet. "…But Fisher, when approached by the Nevada GOP, pointed to the laws that he believes would prohibit such activity. `We decided it was better to be safe than sorry,' Erwin said." |
