Nebraska Legislature to Debate Gambling Issues

LINCOLN, Nebraska – As reported by Associated Press: "Unable to reach a consensus on the issue of expanded gambling, a legislative committee advanced two measures for debate Wednesday that would ask voters to allow casinos in Nebraska.

"And if arguments made in the General Affairs Committee hearing were any indication, support for expanded gambling could splinter and possibly disintegrate when the measures reach the floor.

"…The committee advanced one plan (LR11CA), by Sen. Ray Janssen of Nickerson, that would ask voters whether they want casinos. If voters say yes, lawmakers would then decide where and how many casinos to allow.

"The committee also advanced a measure (LR14CA), by Lincoln Sen. DiAnna Schimek, that would allow casinos on land owned by the state's four American Indian tribes. It also would allow up to five casinos within two miles of any state that allows casino gambling.

"Efforts to merge the proposals failed.

"…There is similar disagreement on what to do with the money generated from such gambling…"
