Nebraska Governor Candidate Proposes Casino Plan

KEARNEY, Nebraska – As reported by the Associated Press: "Stormy Dean, Democratic candidate for governor, thinks Grand Island, Hastings and Kearney should cooperate to build a casino next to the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument on Interstate 80.

"…`They could build a location with a casino-like environment offering live entertainment, food, slot machines, your name it, and put it right next to the Kearney Archway,' Dean said Wednesday.

"`I'd bet visitors would get off the interstate and spend money in Nebraska,' said Dean, a Kearney native and chief financial officer of InfoUSA in Omaha.

"…Because of disappointing attendance, the archway's revenue has fallen short of projections.

"…Dean has supported a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow video slot machines if voters approve the idea on the Nov. 5 ballot.

"The proposed amendment is expected to be on the ballot after a group of cities and counties that operate keno lottery games collected about 178,000 petition signatures. About 107,000 valid signatures are needed…"
