Nebraska Anti-Gambling Letters Causes Scare29 April 2003LINCOLN, Nebraska -- As reported by the Associated Press: "An attempt to persuade state senators to reject a casino gambling measure led to a brief Capitol security scare Monday, angering several lawmakers. "Gambling opposition group, Gambling With The Good Life, sent each lawmaker an envelope containing a $5 bill that had been rubbed with mud to illustrate its contention that gambling results in ŒŒdirty money.'' "The mud, however, dried, crumbled and settled into the bottoms of the envelopes in transit. "Some senators, mindful of last year's anthrax mail scares on the East Coast, called security when they opened the envelopes and saw the dust at the bottom. "...Sen. Ray Janssen of Nickerson was angered by the incident. "...`It's just asinine,'' said Janssen, who is the sponsor of a proposal that could allow up to allow eight casinos in the state. "...Pat Loontjer, executive director of Gambling With the Good Life, said sending the muddied $5 bills was a bad idea. "`In hindsight, we should not have done it,'' she said. `That was not the brightest thing to do. Everybody's so hyper these days because of security.'..." |
