Navajo President Approves Gaming28 October 2001WINDOW ROCK, Arizona –– As reported by Four Corners Daily Times: "The Navajo Nation has given the To'hajiilee Navajo reservation the go-ahead to negotiate a gaming compact with the state of New Mexico. This, after tribal members, twice rejected gaming in public referendums and earlier Council attempts failed. "…`The passage of a Gaming Ordinance will allow To'hajiilee Chapter to pursue further activities consistent with the Chapter's Resolution CBN-01-09-27-616 concerning gaming within that chapter,' [Navajo President Kelsey] Begaye said in a written statement after signing the resolution. "…`The passage of a Gaming Ordinance has been a carefully considered first step that will open economic opportunities for the Navajo Nation,' Begaye said. `The development of nonrenewable resources alone will not sustain the Navajo Nation's operations forever.' "However, only To'hajiilee Chapter can pursue gaming activities. It is still a crime elsewhere across the Navajo Nation to engage in gaming. "…By 2003, the chapter hopes to have built a 100,000-square-foot casino with 650 slot machines and 30 table games. "…`The adoption of a Navajo Nation Gaming Ordinance was a prerequisite to finalizing negotiations for potential future revenues in Arizona.' [Begaye said]…" |
