N.Y. Horse Racing Left in the Dust11 December 2002ALBANY, New York – As reported by the Ottoway News Service: ``The state's harness and thoroughbred racing industries are in such decline that New Yorkers who like to play the horses will bet more on out-of-state races next year than on races at tracks here, according to a state Senate study on gambling. ``It will be the first time since off-track betting was approved that more money will be wagered in New York on races elsewhere, and a sign the industry could collapse in the state without some help, the study said. `` The findings were released yesterday by the Senate's Committee on Racing, Gaming and Wagering, chaired by Sen. Bill Larkin, R-C-Cornwall-on-Hudson. `` `The committee found that New York thoroughbred racing has been in a long, gradual decline, while the harness racing industry is imploding,' the report said…" |
