Most Internet Gambling Takes Place During Work Hours

CALIFORNIA -- As reported by the Louisville Courier-Journal: ``Most traffic at Internet gambling sites occurs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., when America is working.

``Yet less than half of all U.S. companies use software programs that restrict employees' access to online casinos or betting sites, according to a survey conducted last year by Harris Interactive Inc., best known for its Harris Poll.

``The survey was commissioned by Websense Inc., a software security company based in San Diego. According to the Harris survey, 2 percent of employees acknowledge gambling at work. That's the same percentage who admit accessing pornography while on the job.

``…California psychologist Marlene Maheu, a specialist in Internet addictions, said the survey vastly underestimates the problem.

```We don't have numbers because people don't readily admit to gambling at work,' she said. `Many of the gambling sites report that they're getting traffic — 70 percent of the traffic — from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.'

``…According to the survey, which questioned 250 human resource managers from companies with up to 38,000 employees, 47 percent of businesses use software to block access to gambling sites. That's up from just 6 percent two years ago. The survey did not ask companies whether they monitored employees…"
