Monticello Raceway Slots Plan Moves Forward24 September 2003NEW YORK – As reported by the New York Times Herald-Record: "The first real sign that slot machines will ring in Sullivan County comes Oct. 7 at an Orange County job fair. "That's when Monticello Raceway starts looking for some of the 384 employees who will work in its `racino,' a harness track with about 1,800 video lottery terminals. "…This isn't just another empty casino boast, fancy blueprint or blaring billboard, say track and state officials. "State law says harness tracks like Monticello can install the terminals that unlike Indian casinos don't need federal approval. A lawsuit challenging the law was just defeated. Now the New York Lottery is working with the track on its blueprints for the racino. Construction has already begun. "…As soon as the raceway gets the final plans from the Lottery, which supplies and runs the VLTs, the track will start building. And racing won't be interrupted, say Empire officials…" |
