Mohegan Sun Opens Spectacular Casino of the Sky

25 September 2001

UNCASVILLE, Connecticut – (Press Release) -- Sept. 25, 2001-- Mohegan Sun today unveiled the first phase of its highly anticipated $1 billion ``Project Sunburst'' expansion, the largest private development project on the East Coast. The doors of the Casino of the Sky, the 115,000-square-foot centerpiece of the expansion, were opened one week ahead of schedule, following a ceremony featuring a traditional tribal blessing and a speech from Mark Brown, Mohegan Tribal Chairman. Making a special appearance was Connecticut Governor John Rowland. A crowd of thousands rushed in to experience the new Mohegan Sun casino along with The Shops at Mohegan Sun.

``The opening of Project Sunburst marks a new beginning in East Coast entertainment,'' said Mark Brown, Chairman of The Mohegan Tribe. ``The addition of the Casino of the Sky, The Shops at Mohegan Sun, 10,000-seat Mohegan Sun Arena and 300-seat Cabaret places Mohegan Sun on the map of the most magical entertainment destinations in the world. Visitors may be drawn to Mohegan Sun for the gaming, but they will want to stay to enjoy gourmet meals, big name concerts and upscale shopping, among other world-class amenities,'' he added.

Mohegan Sun's Project Sunburst will triple the size of the existing property and will be fully completed in Spring 2002, with the unveiling of a 34-story, 1,200 room luxury hotel tower.

The Casino of the Sky:

The Casino of the Sky adds even more tables, thousands of slots, a 3,000- square-foot high-limit lounge, Keno (coming in Spring 2002) and special non- smoking gaming areas. In addition to the gaming, Mohegan Sun's highly themed casino features breathtaking designs, including the world's largest planetarium dome, which projects changing displays of constellations, sun cycles and stirring clouds.

Wombi Rock, an amazing three-story crystal mountain built inside the casino, is crafted from more than 12,000 individual plates of onyx and alabaster fused to glass. It serves as a three-level nightclub and bar. Just steps away from Wombi Rock is an 85-foot-high indoor waterfall, which also dazzles the eye and senses, while paying tribute to the journey of the tribe from upstate New York.

Dining at Mohegan Sun:

Sixteen new restaurants are part of the ``The Shops at Mohegan Sun,'' a 130,000-square-foot, two-story retail and restaurant promenade designed by the Rockwell Group to represent the Trail of Life, the curved path walked in traditional Mohegan life.

Epicureans will welcome the addition of 16 new restaurants to Mohegan Sun's portfolio of 20 existing dining establishments. Two celebrity chefs introduce their signature restaurants to Connecticut: Jasper White opened New England favorite, Summer Shack, and Todd English introduced Tuscany, an entirely new concept for the restaurateur. Mohegan Sun-owned Rain offers fine dining in a Rockwell-designed environment, featuring cascading water, polished metals, glass ceramic ``puddles'' and shimmering fabrics. Rounding out the options for upscale dining are Michael Jordan's Steak House and 23 Sportcafe. Visitors looking for a quick bite will enjoy unlimited options at Rising Moon Gallery of Eateries, Ben & Jerry's, Big Bubba's BBQ and Johnny Rockets.

Shopping at Mohegan Sun:

Shoppers can find a tremendous variety of superior brands and specialty gifts, from fine apparel, antiques and jewelry to custom furniture and crafts from the Orient. New retail outlets, located in The Shops at Mohegan Sun, include Brookstone, Cache, Discovery Channel, Godiva Chocolatier, Jewelry Nirvana, Old Farmer's Almanac General Store, Silver Nation, Sunglasses USA and Yankee Candle.

Entertainment:

Mohegan Sun's expansion creates a new array of entertainment options and includes a 300-seat Cabaret, which will showcase magnificent performances in an intimate atmosphere and the 10,000-seat, state-of-the-art Mohegan Sun Arena. Mohegan Sun's Arena will host major national acts, like those that have already wowed audiences at Mohegan Sun -- Hootie & The Blowfish, Aretha Franklin, Randy Travis, Ringo Starr, the Black Crowes -- world championship boxing matches, sporting events and much more.

Both the Mohegan Sun Arena and Cabaret will officially open the weekend of November 9th-11th with a star-studded line-up of concerts. The legendary Tony Bennett will give three special performances at Cabaret, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, November 9th-11th. The Mohegan Sun Arena will smoke with country rocker Tim McGraw, Friday, November 9th, and Gloria Estefan will dazzle the crowds with her eclectic, Latin-pop sound Sunday, November 11th. Latin singer/songwriter Jon Secada is slated for Saturday, November 10th at the Wolf Den, which has been host to legendary acts since 1996, all at no cover charge, no minimum -- ever.

Design:

The nature-inspired design of Mohegan Sun's multi-dimensional destination is the result of a unique collaborative effort by several of the world's most renowned architectural and design firms. Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) Associates designed Mohegan Sun's dramatic exterior and hotel tower with inspiration and cultural direction from the Mohegan Tribe. KPF retained the services of Rockwell Group, who advanced their original Mohegan-inspired designs, created for Mohegan Sun's Casino of the Earth, by transforming stories of cosmos into inventive environments for the new gaming space, retail and dining promenade and hotel lobby. Hirsch Bedner Associates is designing the plush room interiors for the luxury hotel opening in Spring 2002.

Mohegan Sun's Project Sunburst will be fully completed in Spring 2002 upon the opening of a 34-story, 1,200-room luxury hotel tower. When complete, the hotel will be the second tallest building in Connecticut, boasting a world-class spa, salon, full-service fitness center and more than 100,000 square feet of high-tech and highly flexible meeting and function space that can accommodate groups of virtually any size, including the Northeast's largest ballroom, at 40,000 square feet.

Mohegan Sun, owned by The Mohegan Tribe, is one of the largest, most distinctive and spectacular gaming and entertainment destinations in the United States. Situated in scenic southeastern Connecticut on 240 acres along the Thames River, Mohegan Sun is within easy access of New York, Boston, Hartford and Providence and located 15 minutes from the museums, antique shops and waterfront of Mystic Places.

Mohegan Sun opened the Casino of the Earth in 1996 and the exciting, new Casino of the Sky in September 2001. With the expansion, Mohegan Sun offers 315,000 square feet of gaming space, 40 new retail shops and dining venues ranging from food court-style to gourmet, a 10,000-seat arena featuring world-class sporting events and concerts, and an intimate cabaret.

Mohegan Sun's evolution will continue with the opening of a 34-story luxury hotel, featuring 1,200 hotel rooms, premier meeting and convention space and a world-class spa, in Spring 2002.
