Mohegan Sun Opening Goes Easy on the Glitz

MOHEGAN, Connecticut -- As reported by the Norwich Bulletin: "Recognizing events of the past week, the Mohegan Sun's new Casino of the Sky will open on schedule Sept. 25, but will do so with a scaled-down celebration.

"Construction inside the casino is nearly complete and all is ready for the 9:30 a.m. opening next Tuesday, according to casino officials.

"…Because of the national tragedies Sept. 11, a private party the night of the opening has been canceled and the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the main entrance to the new Casino of the Sky will be far less elaborate than originally planned.

"The casino and the 130,000-square-foot, two-story retail mall that connects the two casinos are just one phase of Sunburst, the Sun's $1 billion expansion project.

"…The expansion plan is expected to include at least 3,000 new slot machines and 75 new gaming tables.

"…Casino officials admitted Monday that the terrorist attacks prompted the scaled-down celebration.

"Originally, fireworks were to precede the ribbon cutting ceremony, but that aspect has been cancelled. In addition, Gov. John G. Rowland was scheduled to attend the event, but his status is uncertain.

"Attendance for the grand opening ceremonies is expected to be in the thousands and it is not known what impact the events of the last week will have on those attending…"
