Mistress, Widow Fight Over Jackpot

25 September 2002

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the UK Sunday Mail: "The mistress and the wife of a dead lottery millionaire have gone to war over his fortune.

"Jim McCowen's wife Etta, 77, and his lover Wilma Marshall, 54, shared the front pew at the 76- year-old pensioner's funeral service last week.

"But while they were united in grief over the death of Jim - who won £1.5 million (US$2.34 million) - the two are bitterly divided over his legacy.

"Teetotal church elder Jim shocked residents of Stranraer when he walked out of his home and moved into Wilma's council flat in 1998 - two years after he won the lottery.

"…One man said: `A lot of people suspected Jim and Wilma had been an item for years - even before he won the lottery in February 1996.

"`Then Jim had a heart attack and was back with Etta as he recovered.

"`"But the relationship with Wilma started up again.'

"…`Jim said he just got fed up with things and decided to move in with Wilma.'

"But when Jim left Etta for a blonde 20 years her junior, his battling wife insisted her husband did not move out under his own steam. `I put him out,' she said at the time.

"…And she added: `I am just going to take the money. I am not going to fight for it

"`Half the money is mine. There are no ifs and buts about it.'

"…A man who knows both families - and would not be named - said last night: `I know that at the time of the win Jim gave a fair chunk of the money to his and Etta's only child, Jim junior.'

"…Jim, who died of a heart attack, did not let the lottery win change his lifestyle in his final years…"
