Missouri Responsible Gaming Project Targets Elderly2 August 2001MISSOURI –- As reported by the St. Jospeh News Press: "No one's going to confuse the crowd at one of Missouri's riverboat casinos with a bunch of college students on spring break. "That's why Responsible Gaming Education Week, which starts Monday in Missouri, is focusing on the effects of gambling on senior citizens. "Experts say elderly people, because they're on fixed incomes and are frequent casino visitors, are at risk for problems associated with compulsive gambling. "`They're gambling in record numbers,' said Dewey Price, current chairman of the Missouri Alliance to Curb Problem Gambling. `You can see the buses unloading these senior citizens at the casino. They're very vulnerable.' "…The Problem Gambling Alliance, which includes gaming organizations and the state Department of Mental Health, has taken 1,738 calls this year on its toll-free hot line for people seeking help with gambling problems.
