Missouri Casino Employee Allowed to Keep Job

MISSOURI – As reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "Jim and Debbie Schweppe of St. Peters are relieved - she will be allowed to keep her job at the Ameristar Casino in St. Charles, something that was in doubt because he is a police officer.

"The Missouri Gaming Commission had said the couple fell under a law that says spouses or children of appointed officials cannot work at Missouri casinos. The couple filed a lawsuit, and St. Charles County Judge Steve Ehlmann has decided Jim Schweppe is an employee and not an official.

"The Schweppes said Tuesday that they feel like the state used them as guinea pigs to interpret the law. They know of other employees who could have fallen under the same scrutiny, but they happened to be the ones to have to pay $5,000 in legal fees.

"…The judge did not require the state to pay the Schweppes' legal fees, but they plan to ask the Missouri attorney general's office for compensation.

"…Debbie Schweppe has worked at the casino for 10 years and is now an assistant manager and trainer in the slot department. Jim Schweppe has worked for the St. Charles police department for 24 years. The Gaming Commission sent Debbie Schweppe a letter in June last year. It said they recently learned her husband was a police officer, and under state law she could not work there…"
