Mississippi Casinos Fight Power Rate Increase29 August 2001BILOXI, Mississippi -- August 29, 2001 -- As reported by the Associated Press: ``Mississippi Power's planned 9.5 percent rate increase is facing opposition from Gulf Coast casinos. ``The increase will cost the 12 casinos about $5 million a year, said the Mississippi Gulf Coast Gaming Association. `` The casino association wants to oppose the increase in hearings before the state Public Service Commission now scheduled for November. The PSC will decide whether the rate increase is justified. ```We're definitely against the increase,' Beverly Martin, executive director of the casino group, said Tuesday. `Nearly 10 percent is a lot to absorb at one time, and it's not a cost we can pass on to our customers without affecting our bottom line.' of ``Martin said the announcement of the increase was unexpected and comes as the economy is slowing, which also threatens the economic health of the casinos…" |
