Minnesota Legislators Push for State-Operated Casino30 January 2001MINNESOTA -- Jan. 30, 2001 -- As reported by St.Paul Pioneer Press: "Two Republican legislators Monday said they would ask the Minnesota Legislature to approve a state-owned-and-operated casino that they predicted could produce profits of $100 million or more a year. "Senate Minority Leader Dick Day of Owatonna and Rep. Tom Hackbarth of Cedar held a news conference to distribute copies of a draft casino bill they said they planned to introduce this week in the Senate and House. "...Day and Hackbarth said the casino, which would be overseen by Minnesota Lottery officials and an 11-member board, could produce $100 million to $150 million a year. Lottery director George Andersen said the estimate was reasonable. "The bill does not specify a location, other than that the casino would be built in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Under the bill, half the profits would be spent on roads and bridges, and half would go toward one-time construction projects, such as schools or community centers. "...If enacted, either the Day-Hackbarth legislation or Bishop's bill would put the state in competition with Minnesota's American Indian tribes, which operate 18 casinos and have a monopoly on casino gaming..." |
