Michigan Arab-American Community to Tackle Gambling Problems

18 February 2002

DETROIT -- (Press Release) -- Feb. 15, 2002 -- A gambling awareness program will be held on Thursday, February 21st at 7 p.m. at the Dearborn Ford Community & Performing Arts Center (15801 Michigan Avenue) to address the spread of gambling in the Arab-American community. With the presence of casinos in Detroit and Windsor, and the easy access to online gambling, the community may still be in denial.

The event's purpose is to bring to light the destructive aspects that gambling has on businesses and families. A panel of experts from the community will provide insights on the dangers facing the Arab-American community related to gambling and gambling addiction. Certified gambling counselors will discuss ways to spot problem gamblers and to provide them with help.

Various programs available through community and government agencies will also be highlighted.

Local and state officials will share efforts underway to combat gambling related social problems and crime.

A financial planner will talk about the financial implications of gambling, and will provide information on safe financial alternatives.

The program is free and open to the public and will be held at the Dearborn Ford Community & Performing Arts Center (Studio A) at 15801 Michigan Avenue in Dearborn on Thursday, February 21, 2002 at 7 p.m.

Sponsors of the program include the Arab American and Chaldean Council (ACC), the Islamic Center of America, the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS), the Michigan Department of Community Health, the Wayne County Sheriff Department, and American Express.

In addition, WNZK 690 AM will devote time on its Maa Aljalia Radio Talk Show on Tuesday, February 19th from 3 to 4 p.m. to the topic of gambling in the Arab-American Community. William Salaita of the Arab-American and Chaldean Council hosts the program.

Callers can phone-in their questions and comments during the program by calling 248-557-3300.
