MGM Moves Step Closer to A.C.22 June 1999Two days of meetings with Atlantic City officials have moved MGM Grand Inc. a bit closer to building a billion-dollar resort in the East Coast market. "I think it was a good meeting," MGM Grand Chairman Terry Lanni said today of last week's sessions with Atlantic City Major James Whelan and others who traveled to Las Vegas to discuss the project. "We made substantive headway on the two key issues -- acquisition of the land and ingress and egress to the site -- and agreed to each follow through with specific assignments," Lanni said. The project has been held up by a dispute with owners of an acre of land that sits in the middle of the 35.5-acre site where MGM hopes to build its first East Coast hotel-casino. The MGM and Atlantic City officials also discussed whether an elevated or underground roadway leading into the site would be most suitable for the project. Lanni declined to estimate when the issues might be resolved. "I've given up on projecting timetables in Atlantic City," he said with a laugh. |
