Media Man Packer Still Richest Aussie

SYDNEY, Australia -- As reported by CNN: ``Ailing media and gaming baron Kerry Packer remains Australia's richest man, but the competition is closing in on him, according to Business Review Weekly magazine.

``The magazine, which published its respected annual Rich 200 list Thursday, said Packer's estimated net worth was Aust. $5.9 billion ($3.25 billion), down from A$ 6.4 billion three years ago.

``Frank Lowy, patriarch of the global property empire Westfield, takes second spot at A$4.2 billion ($2.31 billion), and paper and packing giant Richard Pratt is number three at A$3.8 billion ($2.09 billion).

``...Packer, by contrast, has a more diversified, and primarily Australian-dominated asset base.

``He runs the market-leading Nine Network television operation, the highly profitably Crown Casino and magazine business Consolidated Press Holdings.

``Packer lost money on a number of risky investments last year, most particularly in the collapsed telecommunications company One.Tel.
